Render fail because of color in timeline

Hello !

So, problem is simple, my export failed multiple time. I went on google and search without any answer, so I did some troubleshooting on my own. I discovered that adding a color segment (“Files > Open Other > Color > Add to timeline”) was the problem. If I remove only that, the export is fine, but with that segment the export fail.
Anyone had a similar problem ? If so, what can I do ?

Other thing, even with color range at “Full JPEG” in the file properties and the export setting, the render is way darker then the playback, any idea ?

Last thing, I use the proxy thing for smoother playback, and it say the video is 1280x720 when the original is 1920x1080, will it have an impact on the final render or will it still be 1920x1080 ?

Thanks a lot !

Don’t do this. Limited is the standard.

The proxy is only for preview. The original 1080p footage will be used for the final render.

For the “full JPEG” it’s because that’s what dev said here Exported Video is darker or colors slightly off so I tried, even before in “limited” it was darker

Ok, good to know thanks ! Do you know if the default proxy folder cleans itself after some time or do I need to do it manually ?

Fair enough, props for doing some research in advance. However, that was a unique case where the source videos were in full range, which is not standard. We don’t know what your source footage is. A quick experiment would be to go to the Properties tab for a clip and change the range between Full and Limited to see if it makes a difference. If it does, perhaps the source videos are tagged wrong or the range is being guessed incorrectly.

EDIT: I reread your first post and realized you already tried that. If that didn’t fix it, then we need a screenshot of the properties page to avoid wild guesses.

I have not experienced the crash you reported, and most users very frequently do this. Adding text using Open Other > Text adds a color generator with a text filter, for example. People frequently use text clips.

What exactly are you comparing and how? For example, “then the playback” could be the preview within Shotcut or one of the main source videos in media player X. Compare using the same player. If you are comparing with playback in Shotcut, then open the export result in Shotcut: double-click on a completed export job opens the result in Shotcut.

One way to determine if Properties > Color range is wrong is to use the Video Waveform scope. Here is a clip with Limited but the scope shows it going over the 100 line:

This could be changed to Full, or it could be illegal values in the file. Sometimes, a minor overshoot like this is OK even if will be clipped in the output or some other tool or player. Because when I switch the file’s color range to full it shows this

And this well-exposed image (contains very brights and very darks) looks like it not using the full range. Here is what a known properly signaled (color range in file metadata) and well-exposed clip will look like in the waveform.

Okay so full range was the problem, my screen being HDR is maybe the problem, cause the og file in VLC looks great, the playback in shotcut in limited looks kinda dark, but the render with limited look way better in VLC. So it may be my HDR setting that don’t works well with shotcut playback, I had the same problem with other software and games where when HDR was enabled the colors looked weird, either it’s my HDR setting or it’s windows auto HDR doing shit, cause on my second and third SDR screen it’s all good.

For the open other thing it failed again, here my timeline if it helps

The upper line is my text, under is an image that needs to be under the text, but it don’t take all the screen, so i needed a color under it to hide the black background, that’s where the third line do the work, cause if I change the background on the text it hides the image, so I need three layers

For the waveform imma be honest I don’t really understand how it works, but here in limited
(can’t put more than one file so here on imgur Imgur: The magic of the Internet)
and here in full

I think that because of my HDR screen, when I look at it in shotcut the longer range between the bright and dark look better, but when I render it’s done in SDR, therefore the dark get way to dark for an SDR content, but I might be wrong

So, I found something else.

Audio clip properties > Speed x4 > Reverse > Audio goes from ~5 seconds to less than 1 seconds, impossible to change.
So I tried this
Audio clip properties > Reverse > Speed x4 > Audio’s length is good, but then export fail all the time.
