Low resolution video inside a higher resolution video

I have a lower resolution video filmed in portrait format at 480 x 848. I want to output a video at 720 x 1280 pixels in portrait format. I don’t want to upscale the video, but am happy to have this lower resolution video contained within a black or white border. I think it would be better if it is centred vertically and horizontally within this.

I am very new to Shotcut and I am not sure how best to do this. I have tried using reframe, which seemed to be able to alter the horizontal dimension, but not the vertical. Could I in someway create a black clip with the high resolution and overlay the low resolution source video. If so can I position the later horizontally and vertically.

I have tried setting the video mode to the higher resolution and importing the mlt from the lower resolution video, keeping the frame rate the same. This seems to corrupt the audio and the imported video is much smaller within the high resolution than I expected.

Hopefully someone with more experience than me can suggest an approach.

Thanks

Here are the steps:

  1. Set Settings > Video Mode to 720x1280.
  2. Add your video.
If the video resolution of the clip is less than the video mode resolution, Shotcut will scale it up to fit.
  3. Click on the clip, and add the Size, Position & Rotate Video Filter
  4. Adjust the size of the clip to be whatever you want. If you want exactly 480x848, you can type that into the filter parameters in the Filters panel.
