Hope you like my latest beginner tutorial, it explains the cut and trim commands:

Well done again. Another useful tutorial for beginners

There is another way to trim the ends of a clip. But maybe not essential in a beginners tutorial. Using the keyboard shortcuts “i” and “o”. Works in Source and in the Timeline. Position the playhead, press “i” to trim what’s before the playhead or press “o” to trim what’s after the playhead.
.

Thanks @MusicalBox, I’ve always struggled with the keyboard shortcuts on any software. Something I need to remember and start using moving forwards!

very helpful Thanx <3

Question! If there is one long source video, and I would like to have several clips out of it(i, o, +) before putting into the timeline. What can I do? It seems clips in the play list have the same name. I can tellthe difference other than the starts and durations. There is no markers before the timeline.

Each sub-clip will have a different thumbnail based on its in point. You can rename a clip in Properties by simply click on the name displayed and changing it.

Thank you for your quick reply.

It seems the clip properties are only changeable on the timeline. So my question is what is a good way to extract some clips out of relatively long videos on the Shotcut, and put into the playlist before putting into the timeline. To separate the clip into several pieces on the tempolary timeline is one way though, it will take long time to re-enconding, or it will be difficult to adjust the start-end time latter.

No, they are changeable in the playlist too, but you need to double-click it to open it in the Source player. Then, change Properties. That automatically updates the playlist item. Unlike Timeline, simply selecting a playlist item does not select it for Properties or Filters.

Simply open the file in the Source player, trim, and then add it to the Playlist. You can do that multiple times with the same file still open in Source.

To open a playlist item in order to trim out a different shot, do NOT double-click it. When you double-click (the Open action), the item is opened for editing including trimming in the player, Properties, Filters, and Keyframes. Rather, to trim a new sub-clip, right click the playlist item and choose Copy to open a copy of the playlist item in the Source player. Now, you can make changes independently and then either add to Playlist or Timeline.

It’s amazing, double click on the playlist works! And I noticed I had red flame around the double clicked clip. Why did you notice I did not have double click? Your reply was like laser beam. My pain has gone. Thnaks.

BTW, Is it good I can’t have tree clip icon among the original and trimmed clips?
