Help! .mlt fails to open and I've tried what I could find in the forum.

Hello amazing shotcut community - I need your help! Beginner here. I just finished my first project, exported it via two default settings successfully, although I noticed there were some proxy clips mixed in with original source clips in the final .mp4 files. I shut down for the day, yesterday, then went to open the .mlt file today to fix the proxy situation and … I can’t open any .mlt files (including the backup I made), it just hangs and creates temp files in the same folder as the .mlt file. Shotcut was working flawlessly until now. I have 3 tracks (audio and 2 video) and the video is about 15 minutes long, with just a few basic filters (gain, fade in/out).

From the forum I tried:

  1. rebooting shotcut
  2. rebooting computer
  3. excluding the program files/shotcut folder in Windows Defender
  4. uninstalling shotcut and re-installing the latest version with the option to remove shotcut registry settings

Here is the header of the .mlt file in notepad:

<?xml version="1.0" standalone="no"?>

I use windows 10:

64 GB RAM, NVIDIA Quadro M1200 graphics card and integrated Intel HD Graphics 630, i7-7820HQ CPU

Any ideas? Thanks!

Are they all different variations of the same project? Have you tried to create a new project and add some clips from scratch.

After Shotcut fails to open the project, you can upload the log file to this forum. Maybe there is a clue in there.

For Windows, the log file is located at:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Meltytech\Shotcut\shotcut-log.txt

To easily access this location:

  1. Open File Explorer

  2. In the address bar, type %LOCALAPPDATA% and press Enter

  3. Navigate to the Meltytech\Shotcut folder

  4. Look for the shotcut-log.txt file

Note: The log file is created every time Shotcut runs. After a crash, do NOT open Shotcut again before saving the log file, as a new log will be created

Start Shotcut and turn OFF proxy in Settings before trying to open the project.

Thank you both for the quick replies. So of course a few minutes after I gave up and posted here the file opened and I was able to make changes and export again. I closed and re-opened the file and it seems to be working, it just takes a long time to open.

As far as the proxy issue, I had made sure to turn off proxy before exporting but the proxy files were still included in the export. I was able to fix it by opening the .mlt in notepad and replacing the proxy file locations with the location of the converted full resolution files, as mentioned on the forum here: Shotcut renders with Proxies instead of original files (FIX & question)

Thank you again for your help. Sorry to bother you.
