Exchange / Swapping out files

Hello everyone,

to save storage space for Picture-in-Picture videos, I downscale source files from 1080p to 720p. After the conversion, I rename the original 1080p source file by adding “HD” to its filename (e.g., video1 - hd.mp4). The new 720p source file then takes on the original name (e.g., video1.mp4). Both files reside in the same Windows folder. After performing a “Reload” within the Properties panel, the parameters for the 720p file display correctly (1280 x 720), and everything works as expected.

So far, so good. However, upon reopening the project, “video 1 - hd.mp4” appears in the timeline. Apparently, the “Missing Files” module located the original file and substituted the new filename, even though no file was actually missing.

After going through the hassle of renaming both files multiple times to bring everything back to its original state , my new workaround is to hide the 1080p source file in a different Windows folder so that the “Missing Files” module doesn’t “accidentally” find it again.

Kudos to the “Missing Files” module; it is impressive that it can locate a sought-after file even after its filename has been changed. This is a very welcome feature when reopening an existing project and having the renamed files automatically detected.

Is there an official method for swapping out inserted files? My search efforts only yielded the general documentation Project Management

Best regards, Florian

We’ve just added a new page in the Documentation about the Replace feature.
I think this is what you are looking for.
