Dual language text boxes, transitioning from video to stil and back again

Hi,
Brand new on shotcut.
I would like to write either two boxes each with a different language or one with two languages and I can only write in English because the Hebrew does not show up in the box when I write it. Can this be fixed? Is there a way to do this that I have not figured out?

I am trying to create a video with both video and stills in it and would like to transition between each. How can I do this?
Thank you for your help

Are you using a ttf font? Will the font work in GIMP or Gravit?

Different text fonts shown.

I don’t know if shortcut supports multiple keyboard input languages.

As far as I know Shotcut cannot have different font styles in the same text box.

You can type English in one text box. Type the Hebrew in another application that supports the Hebrew alphabet and copy and paste it into a second text box. If you want both languages in one text box, you could type text in English then copy and paste the Hebrew underneath the English text.

  1. English text in first text box.
  2. Hebrew text (copied and pasted from google translate).
  3. English text with Hebrew text.

[EDIT] Shotcut does support multiple keyboard layouts. I added a foreign language and it’s keyboard layout and was able to type into the text box using that language. You can type in both languages in the same text box by switching keyboard layouts.

If you’re using Window you can switch keyboards and type in English or Hebrew, or other languages.

Thank you I did try your first suggestion, I was not successful. . I also tried to add Hebrew in shotcut and I could not find Hebrew as a language option…any ideas?
Anytime I use Hebrew, either by my keyboard or through google translate…It shows up in the filter text box but not on the video.
Please help me figure out how you managed to do it.

Here’s the project file with the English and Hebrew text. It works in the preview window in Shotcut and also when I exported it.

English Hebrew.mlt (7.1 KB)

LOL, That is way above my pay grade;) I am a simple person with no programming skills, tho I did teach myself Basic many years ago and studied C++ many years ago…
I have no idea what ttf font or GIMP or Gravit are.
I have spent many hours trying to get the Hebrew in the text boxes pushing all kinds of things and trying stuff…All I need to get this first video out is some Hebrew. Any really beginner help you can give?
Thank you

Hey,
I downloaded your file (thank you) and opened in shotcut…It only showed the English in the play screen though the Hebrew showed up in the text box…just like in my video…
What is wrong with my computer? I have the lastest version of shotcut…
Can you help me with this?

This sounds like you’re trying to get Shotcut to translate English into Hebrew, which it will not.

Gimp is : https://www.gimp.org/ GNU Image Manipulation Program (Graphics editor, Free, Open Source)

TTF is “TrueType” Font TrueType - Wikipedia
TrueType fonts are easy to install, and you can use them within Shotcut. At first I had the percecption you were trying to work with a specific TTF and it wasn’t showing up.

I would say it would be very difficult to show English/Hebrew in the same exact text filter, which @sauron pointed out. I think it’s because Hebrew apparently is written right to left, which English is written left to right. And when pasted Hebrew into a text filter, it’s immediately forced to the right justified. I don’t think it’s any sort of bug, but just the way Hebrew it written and Shotcut recognizes it and correctly adjusts to accommodate Hebrew.

Here’s the exported video of that file.

English & Hebrew

This is a screen shot of my play screen.

The English and Hebrew text is showing in both.

I have no idea what could be wrong with your computer. I’m using the latest version of Shotcut.

I have Hebrew, and I had no trouble adding another text

Not all fonts will work, but typing is RTL

I have Hebrew on my computer and I can write in any program with it but for some reason it won’t show up on the preview screne in shotcut.
I am very frustrated as I have got the video pretty much ready and since I can’t seem to write in Hebrew I guess I will try to do a voice over in Hebrew instead. This is so silly as this is a minute or so of video and I am spending many days working on it! Everyone one seems to get the Hebrew to show up except me. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

Asik, thank you
how do I get RTL?
יש לי עברית ומופיע כאן
As you see, I can write even in this in Hebrew but nothing shows up in the preview window in shotcut if its Hebrew.
Maybe you can direct me to how?
Is RTL = Right to Left??

You could upload your project file. Someone might be able to figure out what the issue is.

How do I do that?
Do I export it or just try to upload the working file??
I have just done about 10 voiceovers and my mic is driving me crazy so I have added the voiceover that seemed the best…
I would lose the voiceover if I could get Hebrew in text…lol

Allis Chiro Rx.mlt (20.0 KB)

I really appreciate your patience with me…
Ok, This is what I was able to do. I think it may be my Surface Pro 4 that may be the issue…
I hope not.
If anyone can help me get the text to show both Hebrew and English I would be ecstatic.

You can in Overlay HTML, and maybe that will work better for @mqldvm as well.

I opened your project file and substituted my video and image files for yours.
The English and Hebrew text are showing in the source viewer. Exported the video and everything is there.

Added some text to the project . It works.

I don’t know what else to try.

I am frustrated and disappointed but thank you for trying. Maybe the HTML overwrite could work but I don’t know how to do that. Help there would be appreciated too.

Hi Dan,
How do I overlay in HTML??
I have tried just copy and paste from the web (google translate) and it still did not show up in the preview
