The beta for the next version due by the end of August is now available. Not only does this fix some new and old bugs, but the main new feature is Subtitles! (Thanks to @brian) Feedback in this thread is appreciated.

I’ve been eyeing these changes on GitHub for the last two weeks. Excellent work, this will greatly help with making short form content!
Once I get home Monday I’ll give it a test and see how it works.

This new subtitles feature looks great

Not sure if not seen or not planned to fix but the new marker issue reported here is still present in the beta.
That post is not indicated as solved. Please do not report about open bugs and suggestions that are not reported as fixed in the release notes as between here and GitHub there are hundreds.
Ok, there were 2 things reported in the thread with the one being discussed more being just working as intended and wasn’t sure if that obscured the other bug.
@brian, I just had a play with the new subtitle feature. It’s working well but I have 2 questions:

Can I copy/paste subtitles on the subtitle track? That would be handy.

I can’t figure out how I can change the font (and font styling) of all subtitles in one go. Yes, I can amend and copy/paste any text filter, but that also copies/pastes the TEXT content as well. Am I missing something?

PS another question - there’s nothing showing in “previous” and “next” as the list scrolls. How does this work? Thanks.

You can simply copy and paste the text as adding a new subtitle item is so easy.

If you want the subtitles to look the same, use the Subtitle Burn In video filter on the Output track instead of Generate Text on Timeline. The latter is primarily if you want to stylize each subtitle item differently. For example, you might change the color on some, or add the Size, Position & Rotate filter to each to animate the size to do the popular text bounce effect.
In order to save a Text: Simple preset without the text you need to remove the text:
- Select Text: Simple
- Select all of the text in Text
- Cut
- Click + to add or update a preset
- Click the Text field to give it focus
- Paste
there’s nothing showing in “previous” and “next”
It is there in very low contrast on dark theme as these are disabled text in a text field.

I did not think copy/paste would be important because I did not expect that people would want subtitles to be repeated. But I did not even consider this very obvious musical use case - which will obviously have plenty of repetition. I’ll keep that in mind.
By the way, did you notice that you can multi-select subtitles in the timeline and drag them to move them?
In addition to Dan’s comment - you can also hide the previous/next display if you do not need it by disabling it in the Subtitles menu. Personally, I leave it hidden.

@shotcut and @brian, adding the “Subtitle Burn In” video filter on the Output track instead of Generate Text on Timeline works fine. Thank you. Also great to see the Subtitles Burn In filter allows me to change the font, font size, position etc just as per the text:simple filter.

Creating the subtitles on the subtitle track was pretty straightforward and intuitive.

But …I was surprised that the subtitles didn’t show on screen.

Likewise I was stumped as to how to change fonts etc.

I figured that the only way to do it would be to use the “Generate subtitles on timeline”.

I wouldn’t ever have thought in a month of Sundays of having to add a filter to the output. Luckily I was able to contact the top devs and get an instant reply!!

I intuitively looked on the subtitles panel for a button or menu item such as “font”, “font style”, “appearance” or such. Also maybe “view subtitles”…
I’m wondering if this aspect could be made easier for new users?
Two suggestions spring to mind:
- Could the subtitles show on screen automatically?
- Could the style/position of the subtitles be controlled from the subtitles panel, rather than having to add a filter to the output (which is actually quite an advanced thing to do…)
Just two suggestions which I hope might be useful to @shotcut and @brian…
(anf if not for now, maybe at some point in the future)?..
Plus, @brian, yes, copying/pasting selections of subtitles would be great for repeating verse/chorus of lyrics.

This is great! I just installed the beta and will give it a try really soon. Thank you very much for adding subtitles!
Some users will not want the subtitles to be burned into the video. So if they are automatically burned in, some other users will be surprised.
I will look into a convenience method to add the subtitle filter from the subtitle panel.
I think this would do more harm than good because people would assume that the position/style will also be embedded in the output file encoded subtitles. But that is not currently supported.
