Yay - I downloaded the nightly build. “Burn in Subtitles on Output” is a great addition in the Subtitle menu, and also its new icon (the italic “A”) on the toolbar. Thank you very much - it works fine, and I think is much more user-friendly.
Apologies for going on about font attributes of Subtitles again, but the problem for me remains: After selecting “Generate text on Timeline” (which is extremely useful, allowing users to:
add fade in/outs;
add keyframed slide ins/outs; etc…)…
…the font seems to always be Verdana (fairly small size - not sure the point size exactly), with a thickness of 3, centred.
I presume this are the default global font attributes (set somewhere in the Shotcut code)?
Fine if you want that font, size and position. But if not?..
So I thought of a suggestion: add a “Set font attributes as default” button on the Tex:Simple panel, thus:
This would be excellent for me anyway, not just for use with subtitles, but for setting global default settings for text.
My idea is that the default text settings, once changed to the user’s preferences (font, size, colour, position, opacity, keyframes) could be called up when:
Opening a new text:simple text:rich filter;
Selecting “Generate text on timeline” from the Subtitles panel, for every text:simple filter on the track.
I think it would be very useful. Thanks for considering!
Not for this version. There is already a suggestion to be able to change the (defaults) preset for any filter. We are not going to start adding it in an ad hoc manner for certain filters. In the meantime, you need to make and manually choose a preset.
So I’ve been playing around with subtitles for a few days, and I do have some suggestions (not sure if they’re possible) and a possible bug report.
Suggestions:
The ability to change the start and end of a subtitle by simply dragging either the front or end of the subtitle like you can with other items in the timeline, would be a very nice improvement. Right now, you can only move the subtitles on the timeline.
Snapping support for subtitles on the timeline. Right now if I drag a subtitle towards another, if it overlaps in anyway, the subtitle I was dragging will go back to its original position. The ability to snap subtitles would be nice, or even the ability to overwrite the end time of other subtitles by dragging another subtitle on top of them.
For accessibility, the ability to at least add colours to the subtitle file would be excellent, especially to indicate when different people are talking, I do believe SRT supports it and it works on YouTube. I used to use a tool on GitHub that would allow me to do this, and the file would export from there as an SRT file and it worked great on YouTube, you can see where I used it once in this video. Unfortunately, that tool is no longer available.
EDIT: Actually, sorry I was mistaken. SRT on YouTube doesn’t support things like coloured subtitles. I actually can’t remember what format it outputted the subtitles in with coloured subs, it might have been YTT, but I’m not sure.
Either way, support for another format which has these features that YouTube support would be great for accessibility.
Bug Report:
As for the bug, I’ve been trying to use Shift + T (Set the selected subtitle to end to end at the cursor position), but it doesn’t seem to work. It just tells me “End time can not be before start time”.
Maybe I’m just using this wrong, but I assume it should change the end time of the current subtitle to wherever the cursor/playhead is on the timeline?
This is a good idea. I will keep this in mind as a suggestion.
Another good suggestion. Hopefully in a future release.
I purposely excluded this from this release because it would take a lot longer for the first release of this feature. This is certainly something I would hope to do in the future.
The problem is clearly evident in your screenshot. But I am not reproducing it. Can anyone else produce it? Maybe, to help me, you could make a bare minimum project file using color clips that demonstrates the problem.
@TJGM and @brian I didn’t try the Shift + T keypress but moving the subtitle clips manually I kept getting “End time can not be before start time” - then I found that if you advance 1 frame after the end of one clip then add another subtitle clip, it works. Hope this helps.
This sounds different. But maybe related. I’ve tried moving clips and changing the end time. But I can not get any unexpected error messages. If anyone can help me reproduce the problem, it would be appreciated.
Today I made a release candidate with the following changes since beta:
Fixed the Linux portable, AppImage, and Snap fail to launch on some systems (e.g. Ubuntu 24.04) with Qt 6 and Wayland.
Fixed occasional audio pop/click with some media files especially with uncompressed audio.
Fixed lag in Filters > search.
Fixed a disabled Crop: Circle or Crop: Rectangle video filter becomes enabled when reselected.
Fixed the hevc_toolbox hardware video encoder fails detection on some Intel Macs.
Fixed file dialogs open slowly in the Linux AppImage.
Fixed overriding Properties > Rotation on a proxy video whose default is not 0 exports with wrong rotation.
This bug affected the creation of the proxy and thus requires making a new proxy, which is easier said than done on Windows due to file locking. Properties > Proxy > Disable Proxy on the affected clips is a workaround if you do not turn off proxy completely.
Fixed Properties > Proxy > Make Proxy does not override a DJI- or GoPro-provided proxy video.
Now Enter or Return in Filters > search changes focus to the search results.
Now Up or Down in Help > Actions and Shortcuts > search changes focus to the search results.
Changed the Softness to 0 in the Obscure With Blur and Obscure With Mosaic filter sets.
Added a Power (W) ( #gps_power#) field to the GPS Text video filter.
Added Burn In Subtitles on Output to the Subtitles toolbar and menu button.
This adds the Subtitle Burn In video filter or switches the UI to it if it already exists.
BUG? Might be intended and minimal, but when importing subtitles to an existing file it does not set the file as “modified” (* at the top) and will not warn to save before closing. The History is updated though. I don’t thing it’s a big deal but figured I’d share what I found.
Messed around again with the latest stable version. It seems like the Shift + R and Shift + T functionality just doesn’t work for me. I’ve tried with old projects, new empty projects with one video file, SRT files that already have subtitles, subtitles created from scratch in Shotcut, etc…
When I press Shift + R on the first subtitle on the timeline, it will simply change the start time of the subtitle to 00:00:00:00, rather than where my cursor is. Again, this is only on the first subtitle.
If I use Shift + R on any subtitle after the first subtitle, I get “Start time can not be before previous subtitle”, even when the cursor isn’t placed before the previous subtitle, it’s in an empty gap between the two subtitles.
Shift + T when used on the first subtitle on the timeline, if the subtitle begins at 00:00:00:00, the subtitle will simply disappear, even though it’s still listed in the subtitles panel.
Using Shift + T on any subtitle that doesn’t begin at 00:00:00:00, will simply give you the error about the “End time can not be before the start time”.
I’ve attached a quick video of me messing around with it, and I’ve also attached the same project used in the video, with the timeline video replaced by a basic colour instead.
