Voiceover input issue on macOS 25.12.31 with a stereo mic

  • What is your operating system?

  • MAC OS 15.7.3 (mbp m4 max).

  • What is your Shotcut version (see Help > About Shotcut)?

  • 25.12.31

  • Can you repeat the problem? If so, what are the steps?

Yes. Always with the voiceover function.

Problem with a stereo input mic on macOS to do voiceover inside Shotcut.

The very same mic can be recognized on Windows and it works well with Shotcut voiceover.

The very same mic can be recognized on macOS and it works well with the system audio recorder and Davinci voiceover.

Shotcut works well with my default mbp mic (mono input) with the same sample rating (48kHZ) and 32bit float.

The only problem is that Shotcut cannot automatically deal with the same mic on macOS like what’s on Windows system.

I tried some software like Loopback and Blackhole to route it but failed and I don’t think this is the way to solve such an issue. Cause it did well on Windows.

Could you please help to indicate whether this is a macOS issue or something you can help with Shotcut software?

Thank you.

Explain that more. Is it using the audio input jack on a mac or a USB input?

cannot automatically deal with

And you should explain that more too. What happens as you see it in the UI? Does your audio input appear in Settings > Audio/Video Device?

We cannot make it work with everything in theory. Shotcut use the Qt library to list your audio inputs and ffmpeg to do the recording.

Hi, ok let me explain, the case is I bought a new mic to do voiceover with Shotcut.

It is an USB mic, with stereo inputs. It is shown on both windows pc and mac that it has a 2ch input instead of 1ch. (→this is the hardware part)

Case 1: Windows PC + Stereo Mic + Shotcut Voiceover→ Good

I tested this mic on the Windows PC, with Shotcut’s voiceover function. It worked well like my old mic. (→this means Shotcut can work with the 2ch Stereo Mic on Windows properly with the default settings.)

Case 2: MBP macOS + Stereo Mic + Shotcut Voiceover→ Bad Voiceover

But since I bought this mic for my laptop MBP for working mobility, I tested it with the macOS Shotcut. The voiceover results recorded in Shotcut sounded like the 2ch inputs were mixtured strangely - like I used a voice changer to fake identity.

Case 3: MBP macOS + Stereo Mic + macOS voice memo software→ Good

Then I tested the mic with the default recording software on macOS. The mic was recognized and it worked properly. (→this means it’s not a driver issue with the system)

Case 4: MBP macOS + Stereo Mic + DaVinci Resolve voiceover→ Good

Then I tested the mic with DaVinci. The mic worked properly. (→this means it can work with 3rd party software).

Case 5: MBP macOS + Mono Mic (MBP’s default) + Shotcut Voiceover→ Good

Then I tested the MBP’s default mic, which is an 1ch mono mic. It worked fine with Shotcut Voiceover function. (→this means Shotcut’s voiceover function is good on macOS.)

FYI. All settings are the same when I tested the mic with Shocut on both Windows PC and MBP macOS. Shotcut could show and listed this stereo mic in the sound input device list.

So my guess was: Shotcut on macOS cannot deal with the 2ch inputs like its Windows version.

But I could not find any option in the settings to toggle or setup the mic’s channels in Shotcut.

So I tried to use some other software like Blackhole and Loopback to help, but failed. Then I came here for help.

Thank you for the additional information. I have tested primarily with a Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920, which is USB and stereo. I tested again in the new version, and I do not experience the problem you describe. In Audio MIDI Setup, I can only choose 16, 24, or 32 KHz 16-bit integer, and I have tested 16 and 24 OK. Maybe you need to try some different values. We do not have the resources to try a lot of different devices and reproduce things. I already have a lot of gear!

I think it can help others or possibly in the future if you identify the model of your microphone.
