Video Waveform - values above 100 and below 0 - how to fix

I’ve seen this on quite a few source videos. When I show the Video Waveform scope, there’s quite a bit of the picture above “100” and below “0”. Any filter I add seems to clamp the video to 0-100 range and doesn’t look very good. What can I do to fix it?

What is the ultimate destination of this video? If it is destined for YouTube or some such it’s a different kettle of fish than if destined for broadcast or, say, Netflix.

It sounds like the filter you are using is taking you out of “full” range (digital 0 - 255) and putting you into “limited” or “tv” or “video” range (digital 16 - 235). Which filter is it? And what is the source of this video?

The reasoning behind this is best explained by the developers.

Sources are unknown. Target is playback on a PC. Possibly stream to a TV with Plex, Kodi, etc. I’m not doing professional work.

Clamping of the values to 0 and 100 happens with White Balance, Levels, Color Grading, Contrast, etc. (I haven’t done an exhaustive search). Just to be clear - It’s not re-scaling to fit between 0 and 100 - it’s just cutting off the values that exceed those limits.

This happens when the video is full range but not signaled as such. In the latest version 18.12 you can override the clip’s color range in Properties.

Perfect! thanks!
