Using Shotcut subtitles and editting video into chunks

Hi there

I have a 5 minute video clip which I want to cut into 3 shorter clips split with short clips of text in between each clip, and also create with subtitles on the video part. I have created the subtitles on the full 5 minute video but can’t see how to edit the subtitles so that they match each of the clips. Is it better to cut the video up first and then create the subtitles on each shorter version?

The way subtitles work there is they’re tied to the timeline of the whole project, so if you’ve already finished the subs on the full 5-minute video, they won’t automatically “move” when you start chopping things up.

What’s usually easier is to do your cuts first, get the shorter clips lined up with the text transitions in between, and then add subtitles so they sync properly with each chunk. If you try it the other way around, you’ll end up spending more time re-adjusting subtitle timing for each cut.

That said, if you’ve already got a good subtitle file, you could export it (as SRT for example) and then manually split/edit that file to match each new clip — but honestly, unless the subs are super detailed, it’s less headache just to rebuild them after cutting.

Curious, are you planning to export the three clips separately, or keep them as one project with text screens in between? That could also affect which workflow makes the most sense.

That makes sense, to clip then do the sub-titles. At the moment I plan to keep it as one video - its three parts of a counselling session split into sections to allow questions to be asked for each section as a training exercise. But it might be better to do each video clip separately, just with text titles and subtitles, and then embed the clips into a presentation in LibreOffice and create the text screens in there. Does that sound sensible?

If you have the whole video already subtitled with correct timings, then just save that project as an mlt, and use import> mlt xml as clip. It makes it easier to chop when the whole project is done without messing edits up.

Otherwise if the timings don’t match, then just edit the video first, add subtitles later on
