Unwanted sound distortion after importing

Howdy, I’ve been using Shotcut for a few years now and am super impressed with its capabilities. I’ve just run into a problem that’s killing me though.

I’ll import video from my phone and the first ~2sec of audio is distorted and then the rest is fine. On my phone and my PC the audio is fine, but previewing in Shotcut, as well as the exported video from Shotcut the problem is there. I’ve seen it a few times here and there in the last few years, but now it’s every single video that I bring in.

Any ideas? And what details do you need to help diagnose it?

Thanks

Could you post a screenshot of the audio and video tabs in the properties panel for your clip? Maybe we can see a clue in there.

As a guess, if your clip happens to be VFR (or even if it isn’t), there are instructions to convert it here:

Thank you!

Apparently the videos are VFR, even though 30 is specifically selected in my phone settings. I tried the standard and “high efficiency modes” and got the same VFR and audio distortion with both.

I was able to convert it and fix the problem thanks to your link, thank you for the workaround solution. But that is also a bit problematic, because it turns a 14sec 41MB video into an additional 511MB file.

I just spent some time on Google to see if there’s something I can do differently on my phone, to no avail. I see one other person asking the same question on Google with no response. I don’t know what has changed in the last few weeks, but I suppose my best solution for now is to start recording and pause for a few seconds before speaking.

And here are the other two it wouldn’t let me upload in the last post:

It’s unfortunate. It wasn’t that long ago that it was very reliable to edit footage from about any phone. But they keep making changes to the video in phones and now we see more and more that phone recordings require conversion to edit smoothly.

Yeah, my wife’s iPhone started coming in weird a couple months ago, with colors looking muted. The videos are HDR and I had to convert them (thanks to a result I found here). Then they were much too saturated and needed adjustment. Oof.

Thanks again for the diagnosis

In the screenshot you are using lossless, which is guaranteed to create big files, you are fine with better here instead of best. Perhaps…

Also, you can use handbrake to convert files…

And Yeh, try to switching to filmic or open camera, not as great as gcam, but I believe they offer CFR, haven’t really used them myself.
