Today's Broadcast Media Format

Hi to all, Shortcut users and fans,

This is Eugene,

I have questions to ask and caroused…

It’s been 40 some years since I left
Broadcast industry.

I would like to know, what type of
media format does broadcasters TV
stations and network use to broadcast
TV shows and movies as we watch on TV???

For example…

40 some years ago…

It was 20th Century analog…

They used
– U-Matic video tape
– Wheel to wheel tape
– Sony D2 broadcast tape
– Batacam SP tape

NOW what do they use nowadays???

I still see ENG cameras continue since then.
What format tape they use on their TODAY’s
ENG cameras???
I bet an “SD” card right???

Or DV tape???

But I heard that since that the media
are still using the ENG cameras, they
probably still using “Batacam SP Digital”???

For the LAUGH…

40 or 30 some years ago I’ve been using
S-VHS tapes!!

I still have an S-VHS tape and a JVC Pro’s ENG camera
with it.

Now I have ( well, a decade ago ) a JVC small HD camera
that use “SD” card. I like that. Easy.
And the camera does has it’s RCA cable-out.

Regardless what media format they use, they can still use
the editing software like “Shortut” and import their format on it.

When I watch TV or Cable TV or satellite C-band TV channels,
I always wonder what format tape they’re broadcasting the
TV shows and movies.

Some I can tell the blends between the movie and the TV
commercials. That’s because from what I understand
some use a computer system with all the TV shows and
Movies were copied onto the computer hard drive for a LINE-UP
system and schedules. But what media format was
the TV show and Movies were on when delivered???

It seems to me that the ENG cameras are still around today.

My nephew saw a local TV station crew, a reporter and
the camraman was using JUST an iPhone 13 as their news
camera???

I heard when the Digital age arrived, my local ABC station in
SEATTLE, KOMO-TV, ALL of their staff were required to
take Digital classes or Digital training. No matter what
IF the staffer is a secretary or a custodian. Still have to
know all that new stuff IF they’re NOT a video technician
or satellite operator division.

Back in the mid 1980’s when I was in the broadcast
industry, a local PBS TV station, KCTS-9 Seattle
was using SONY D2 tape with their SONY DVR-20
or DVR-28 VCRs to copy their D2 tapes onto VHS tape
for consumers. And I definitely do recall the title of
the video “WASHINGTON”.
KCTS-9 Seattle produced it.
That was in mid-1980’s.

So right now since 1980’s what do broadcasters use
nowadays?? I bet the media format is getting smaller
and smaller like SD card and USB thumb drive???
And big ENG cameras are still around, TODAY!!

The one media I can think of that doesn’t change.

HOLLYWOOD. They continue filming with 70 mm
films so that they can keep the negative films for
re-master in the future. Their 70 mm films were
made by “Panavision” 50 some years ago.
But they ended the 35 mm films as well.

IF you know the answer on the broadcast media format,
can you send me a link or pictures so that I can see
what kind of tape they use today???

It’s 2025 now. And I still see ENG cameras.

No matter what media format they use,
they can still import onto video editing software,
like this one “Shortcut”.

My friend still use his “Final Cut Pro” on his iMac computer.

I used to go to the NAB show and exhibits in Las Vegas back
in the 1990’s.

I should’ve know better to go to CES shows instead.

That’s it. Anyone knows in the industry???

Thanks,
Eugene
