Tips for Achieving a Found Footage Horror Film Look?

Greetings Shotcutters,

I’m working on a project where I want to nail that classic found footage horror vibe (think Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, or even more stylized stuff like V/H/S). I’m curious if anyone here has tips, tricks, or workflows for pulling this off convincingly.

Some things I’m considering:

Camera work: handheld, shaky cam vs. tripod moments for contrast

Lighting: how to balance “natural” light sources (flashlights, candles, practicals) without losing too much detail

Audio: ideas for getting that “real” lo-fi sound without making it unlistenable

Editing/FX: glitch effects, timestamp overlays, intentional cuts or tape hiss/static to sell the illusion

Gear/software: any favorite plugins, LUTs, or post tricks to emulate consumer camcorders, VHS, or phone footage?

If you’ve experimented with this style (or have go-to resources), I’d love to hear what’s worked for you!

Thanks in advance.
