Steps to reproduce:
Create new project
Add a Color Timeline (Any color)
Add a Text Timeline
Extend the Text Timeline
Split the Text Timeline
Boom, black background on the 1st text timeline

My workaround or temporary solution is setting the background color alpha value to 1
I do not reproduce it using my Flatpak build, and I do not know what yay shotcut installs. More than likely it needs to upgrade MLT to the latest version (released same weekend as Shotcut 23.09 for a reason) as it has a fix for transparent color values getting saved wrong and then interpreted as black exactly as this bug describes:
