My apologies in advance for what is probably a stupid-simple question: I have a video file (with audio), plus a separately-recorded audio track. I want to basically play the video straight through, but the sound quality varies throughout (sometimes the video’s audio is better, sometimes the separate audio is better). What’s the simplest way to switch back and forth between the two audio tracks? Just split both tracks wherever I want to switch, and then manually mute one and un-mute the other? Is there any (easy) way to get a short fade-in / fade-out between the two, or would that entail splitting them at different points and then manually adding a fade-in / fade-out filter to each track during the overlap?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
There’s no real one answer because it all depends on the quality of your audio tracks and where exactly you want to cut back and forth between the two. It also depends on how you want to go about with your workflow. You just have to experiment and find what’s best for you and your project. Sometimes a straight cut between the audio clips would work to do the switch and maybe other times you would have to fade them in and out to get a better result.

You could add a transition to audio tracks just like you could do with videos. You can either drag one audio clip on top of another clip or stretch the audio of one clip on top of the other.

How do you drag one on top of another if they’re not in the same track? I thought clips had to be in same track (and then overlapped) to do a transition.
They do have to be on the same track. So just put them on the same track to create the transition.
Like video clips there are several ways to transition audio clips. Each will give you a slightly different result.
- Overlap.
- Audio fades.
- Key framing the Gain filter.
Thank you both for the responses!
