Start with a transition

I don’t really know how to explain this and maybe it’s already been answered, I’m sorry if it has. Here goes:

I know I can have a choice of 25+ more transitions between two elements on a video track. But what I would like is to be able to have those transitions available to the beginning of a single element. For example, right now I can have a Fade In Video filter at the beginning of an element, but I’d like to have the element appear, for example, Diagonal Top Left. I know I can do this kind of Heath Robinson by using a hidden element, off the canvas, and mucking about with the timing of the effect, but is there a proper way to do this that I have missed?

Many thanks in advance!

I’d do it by putting a transparent (or black or whatever) image first, then doing a transition from that to the element you want.

Yes, that’s similar to the Heath Robinson method I mentioned. I wondered if there was an “official” way to do it. Guess not - you cannot transition from “nothing” to something, or something like that. No worries, Heath Robinson to the rescue!

Thanks!

Yes, that is the way or some other color since that is implied (transition from what, black?). Then, you can delete the clip before the transition.
