When I create a slide show it is created all bunched together on the time line
unless I create each photo individually.

It looks to me like your Image duration vs Transition duration ratio is too tight.
I’ll get the same result if, for example, I use these values:
Image duration: 2.0 s
Transition duration: 1.0 s
Either increase your image duration, or decrease your transition duration.
