Greetings & Thanks in advance,
I having been successfully using subtitles on every video EXCEPT a small one today.
- I try to use subtitles and it says “failed” exit code 4?
- I tried to reset shotcut and this did not fix
- Any idea?
- I am using linux mint

What says “failed”? Are you importing subtitles from a file? Are you exporting? Can you give more detailed instructions?
Greetings
I suspected wrongly that I gave enough information.
I am trying to merely recognize the subtitles for the video to make subtitles
Not importing; merely trying to run subtitles on the video
Not exporting, but that will come AFTER subtitle recognition
Here’s the order: Import video, add videos > click subtitle button > speech to text (as superuser) > select all tracks (tried individual tracks too) > click OK > I see progress bar “extractng audio” then it says “Speech to text X” > view log> whisper_init_from_file_with_params_no_state: loading model from ‘/home/john/.var/app/org.shotcut.Shotcut/data/Meltytech/Shotcut/extensions/whispermodel/ggml-base-q5_1.bin’
whisper_init_with_params_no_state: use gpu = 1
whisper_init_with_params_no_state: flash attn = 0
whisper_init_with_params_no_state: gpu_device = 0
whisper_init_with_params_no_state: dtw = 0
Failed with exit code 4
Any idea why this happens when it worked before?
Thanks for providing additional information. Is that the entire log? The next message is supposed to be:
whisper_init_with_params_no_state: devices = 2
Maybe it is failing while trying to detect some devices.
Can you tell me what version of Shotcut you are using and how you installed it?
Greetings
I am using:
Linux mint
Shotcut version 25.08.16 FLATPAK
Thanks for the response. As a test, could you try the portable package from our download site?
I can confirm this is a problem in the Flatpak version 25.08. It used to work. It is not obvious to me why it fails now.
I upgraded whisper.cpp to the latest version in the Flatpak hoping that would be a quick, simple fix, and it is working! You should be able to update it tomorrow on the 30th. It will have the same version number since it is outside of Shotcut’s code. But you can verify that it pulls an update and try it.
Thanks forreply
I do not know. Maybe it automatically updated already. All I do is push an update here, and FlatHub takes care of the rest. It appears to have succeeded. You can try to run in a terminal
flatpak update org.shotcut.Shotcut
That is what I did to update, and it works now for me.
