I have noticed that, when I drag a video file into the playlist and/or onto a video track, the video’s volume is automatically lowered compared to when I listen to it natively on a site like YouTube or on other offline media players. Is there a way to keep Shotcut from doing this and effectively lowering/distorting the audio?
The Volume of the Player in Shotcut is set by default at (I think) -15 dB
So if you play a video in a media player with the volume set at 100%, it will sound louder than when played in Shotcut with the Volume at -15 dB.
Raise the Volume to 0 dB in Shotcut, play the video and compare with the media player.
By the way, no mater how high or low the volume is set in Shotcut’s Player, it doesn’t affect your clips. They will be exported at their original audio level.
The audio itself is still at a lower volume when I set the dB to 0 in Shotcut, so there must be some other setting that is controlling this. Setting the dB to 0 in Shotcut itself still also plays the audio of downloaded videos at a lower volume, same as if I raised it up to 5 dB.
Export the clip (from Shotcut) and compare the audio level with the original in a media player. Do you still hear a difference?
You can also check your operating system’s Volume Mixer to see if Shotcut is at the same volume level as the other apps.
On Windows:
-
Right-click on the Volume icon in the task bar
-
Open the Volume Mixer
Shotcut’s volume is displaying the same as the rest of everything else when I right click the volume icon. Exporting the clip still lowers the volume compared to when I played it before importing it into Shotcut.
I just imported an audio file in Shotcut (on a video track) then I exported it.
Compared with the original, the volume sounds the same.
I imported both (original and Shotcut export) in Audacity and both waveforms are identical.
So I don’t know what else to say… You don’t have audio filters applied to any of the clips, tracks or the Output I suppose?
So your OS is windows, but just a couple more questions.
What is your current version of Shotcut?
Is this a one off that you recently noticed or is it a persistent issue? Test by creating a new project, importing a different video clip, and immediately exporting.
You could also try an older (or newer) version of shotcut for diagnostics.
