@jonray pointed me towards Sharex some years ago. I still use it, but for more extensive screen recording I use OBS Studio. It is more complex but has a lot of features that I now find I can’t do without. A good introduction can be found here:

Further note about screen capturing - as Dan pointed out recently, the Windows Snipping Tool now has an option for screen video, not just stills. Another option.
There’s a super nice weird little java applet app whatever is java anyway type thing you can find on github. that’ is the one i prefer. think Flameshot for windows, but like alpha version.
