It happens sometime while playing the edited clip. A window pops out saying this:

The program has crashed, but it could be due to video drivers or operating system/hardware issues. I would update the Microsoft Visual C++ libraries and whatever graphics drivers you use if you haven’t already. That should be an easy fix, and if its still a problem reinstall Shotcut after that.
If it still persists there may be a larger issue with your system or hardware, but I can’t be sure exactly what that’d be…
