Question Regarding Encoders

I’m trying to broaden my knowledge on encoders, and I was hoping someone could weigh in on whether my understanding is accurate.

  • x264 - Software encoder
  • x265 - Software encoder that provides better compression / quality, but takes longer to render than x264
  • h.264 - Hardware accelerated version of x264
  • h.265 - Hardware accelerated version of x265

If the above is correct, is the HEVC_NVENC codec h.264 or h.265?

I appreciate anyone’s attempt to educate me on this.

HEVC is another name for h.265.
AVC is another name for h.264

H.264 and H.265 are the names of standards while x264, x265, and NVENC are the names of implementations of those standards.
