Hi, my os- windows11. In Shotcut , please suggest me a way to put multiple markers on a video(audio included) so that i can easily remember important parts to take/edit from a video. by markers i meant something to mark certain portion on a video during editing, suppose i have an 5 min video from which i need to remove unwanted portions and keeps only important portions, so when i’m watching+listening the video on that software, i get first important portion 2min to2min30s , so i put 2 markers on 2min and 2m30s then i continue to watch next portion of video to find another important portion. like that i found 2 more important portions 3m-4m15s and 4m-4m25s, so i give 4 markers on those too. also i should be able to easily recognize/differentiate between a marked/labeled important portion from an unmarked unimportant portion just by viewing the track diagram without needing to play each video portion, like important marked portions are of different color than unmarked portins or I could only select important portion by single mouse click but cant select unimportant portion by single mouse click or could add tags to those important portions. It’s like lebel track in Audacity . then using the software’s a certain feature i can keep only marked regions and remove all other unimportant portions from that video easily by single/few clicks.
i want to mark segment like this-
That is not the way that Shotcut works. There are a couple of main editing styles in Shotcut. 3-point editing and splitting a clip on the timeline.
-
3-Point Editing: This method involves setting three points to define the in and out points of a clip and where it should be placed on the timeline. It’s useful for precise control over where clips start and end. You do this by first opening the clip in the Source player and this is where you mark in and out points by using I and O. Then, you can drag, click a button, or use a shortcut to add to the timeline (or the Playlist if you want to save it later). To do this multiple times simply switch back to the Source player and mark new in and out points.
-
Splitting a Clip on the Timeline: This technique allows you to divide a clip into multiple segments directly on the timeline. You can then rearrange, delete, or edit these segments independently. It’s great for quickly trimming and organizing your footage.
Ty, So there’s no way to mark all the important parts of my source video before generating result video(it’s ok if there’s no way to add all important parts/delete all unwanted parts at once but i need to be able to mark all the important segments before editing) with those important parts only?
also i want to be able to easily recognize/differentiate between a marked/labeled important portion from an unmarked unimportant portion just by viewing the track diagram without needing to play each video portion, like important marked portions are of different color than unmarked portins or I could only select important portion by single mouse click but cant select unimportant portion by single mouse click or could add tags to those important portions. It’s like lebel track in Audacity .
When I first started editing my clips I also wanted to mark parts of videos and even manually wrote down the times of important events. But after a few projects I eventually accepted that it’s way faster to edit directly either by splitting or 3 point as Dan describes above.
If you really want to go the mark-areas route you can use the markers on timeline feature: add a clip on the timeline and press M to add a marker, you can then ctrl+drag on the marker to extend it to make a marker range and again ctrl+drag to move each edge of the range. Then you can go on and keep adding these markers.
But unlike Audacity there’s no one click option to only keep marked areas in the end. You’ll have to manually go to each area and split/cut the clip then delete the segments you want to remove. As you can see, this is basically extra work so you might as well just press S (or right click → edit → split at playhead) from the begining.
Tyvm, this is the example of what i’m trying to do- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CY6xeXfQ-gc&list=PLCTyMTsLrK_ewRCdUUS5z5zEpVKHjR4pD
I believe you are after 3 Point Editing as @shotcut has pointed out.
There is no “Marker” when doing this in the Source Viewer. The In and Out points in a rough sense could be considered 1 marker or a specified range you want to make a clip from.
Here is an example:
After the clip is added to the playlist, and perhaps you have multiple clips, you can edit that clip’s start/end range at any time. Double-click on the clip in the playlist. Then you can move the In and Out icons. You can add filters like text, color correction, etc.
To preview your entire project, click on the “Project” tab
The numbers on the bottom in the Project viewer indicate the order of each clip in sequence as you have set in the Playlist.
I reordered a few clips in this example:
