it seems to me that in previous versions we could change the duration of an image AFTER dropping it into the timeline; then be able to click on “Default” to subsequently use this value on future images.

Maybe in some very old version, but it has not been permitted to change it on the timeline for quite a while. You already found the correct way to do it, but also you can simply open it in Source and skip playlist.
