Opening .mlt on new device = crash

What is your operating system?
Win11

What is your Shotcut version (see Help > About Shotcut)?
25.03.29

Can you repeat the problem? If so, what are the steps?

I’ve recently moved over to a new laptop, have reinstalled Shotcut and transferred over all my mp4 files.
I was half way working through a project, but upon opening the .mlt on my new device, the project opens, and asks me to search for the projects video files. I can succeed in doing this, and am presented with lots of green ticks for having identified the video resources, but on trying to load the project, Shotcut crashes.

It seems to have created a new file file with a random letter string?

See attached log file and .mlt
On my old device, I was using Win10 and Shotcut 24.11.17.
I’m now on Win11 and Shotcut 25.03.29

I’m presuming it’s something really obvious but would be grateful for a pointer.
Log file suggests MemoryLow, which is bizzare considering it’s a brand new, top end gaming laptop. My old device was… 18 years old…

shotcut-log1.txt (51.2 KB)
p4 v4.mlt (2.3 MB)
shotcut-vwUrhC.mlt (1.5 MB)

When you open “p4 v4.mlt”, Shotcut should open a dialog to prompt you to select the source for each missing file. It sounds like it did that. After you close that dialog, it should prompt you to save the new project and the suggested file name should be “pv v4 - Repaired.mlt”. Did it do that? Or did it crash before that step?

Here is something you can do as an experiment…

  1. Open p4 v4.mlt
  2. When when prompted to find the new files, don’t do it. Just click “ok”.
  3. Save the new project (you can use the suggested name with “- Repaired.mlt”
  4. Open the “repaired”. project. Since you did not select the new location for the files, it might prompt you again. Just cancel. The project should show with a bunch of transparent clips. Can you play it? Does it crash?

Repeat the process a few times and select a few files very time (but not all of them). Maybe there is one particular file causing the crash.

Another suggestion is to download version 24.11.17 on your new machine. Older versions can be downloaded here:

By the way, I tried to open your project on my Windows 11 machine. Of course, I don’t have your files. So I replaced them with my own. I did not experience a crash.

Thanks Brian - that’s looking better.
I’ve resaved under ‘-repaired’ and am now able to open the project, with a populated timeline with blank clips, as you say.
How do I replace these clips with the correct file located, a few at a time?
Thanks!

Here is an example of what the missing file dialog looks like after I have selected new paths for the first three files. At this point, I would click “OK” and save the repaired project. But only three files would be repaired.

If this project works, then you could add more and repeat the process.

That is not what it is saying. The low memory checking function is simply reporting the available free memory. When it is actually very low, a warning dialog will open.
