Is it possible to mute a selected part of some audio without slicing it up? I was thinking like a filter overlay that had a draggable area.

Yes, with the Gain / Volume filter by creating keyframes

Nice idea. It works quite well. You have to sometimes watch the levels a bit when creating the keyframes as the clicking and moving tends to move the volume line a little.
