I want to merge multiple video files, AVI or MKV or MP4 into one MP4 video. I have selected the videos to merge and they show up in the playlist but am unsure how to merge them and where to find them once they are merged. The multiple choices confuse someone like me who is a novice at this.

Just drag them into the timeline in the order you want. When exporting make sure you export from timeline. Set the export codec to your liking. Thats all 
It is not necessary to use the timeline. Export > From = Playlist > Export Files. If you have NOT used the timeline, From will already be set to Playlist and eliminate that step. It really is that simple.
