I am looking for a function or setting in the playlist to detect which scene or photo is already in the timeline. Would be very helpful for many scenes or photos.
Does anyone know of such a function??

There is no feature at the moment that marks the items in the playlist that were added to the Timeline.
The playlist is just a like a special single track timeline, where clips i stored after each other
There is no relation between the playlist and the multi track timeline in shotcut, you can copy clips from playlist to timeline, like you can copy clip from one track in the timeline to another.
The is no link between clips, even if the are a segment of the same media file
I understand it can be confusing, because many people use the playlist as a collection/bin of source media files from disk
