Iris expressionist-like effect in Shotcut?

Hi,

is it possible to create an iris effect in a flexible way like those used in expressionist films from the 20s in Shotcut?

Please find an attached animated GIF with what I mean.

Mask:Circle if I remember correctly.
Or something related to circle, not sure if mask or alpha.

Hi @Birdchaser

The quickest and easiest way to create an iris effect is with the Crop: Circle filter.

This method will not allow you to choose where on the screen the iris effect will start and finish though.

To get more animation options, use the Mask: Simple Shape instead.
You will be able to choose any start and end positions. You will also be able to adjust the softness of the iris edge and the shape of the iris (ellipse or perfect circle)

  • Add a black clip on the track above your video clip, and align it with the video.
  • Add a Mask: Simple Shape filter on the black clip.
  • Set Operation to Subtract
  • Set Shape to Ellipse
  • Set the Size values to 1 and 1
  • Set the Position values to where you want the iris to appear.
  • Activate keyframes
  • Use keyframes to edit the size and shape of the ellipse and its position

NOTE: You can also temporarily use an Opacity filter to help you position the ellipse when it is very small.
