I’d like to propose the addition of a dedicated “Adjustment Layer Track” to Shotcut, as a distinct track type separate from the existing Audio and Video tracks. This will presents a unique opportunity to significantly enhance workflows, particularly for VFX and motion graphic artists.
Think about the Output track – anything you put there changes the whole video. What if an “Adjustment Layer Track” worked like a mini Output track for just some of the video layers?
For example, if you put an Adjustment Layer Track above Video Tracks 1 and 2, any effect you put on that Adjustment Layer Track would only change any video tracks below it.
Yeah, but the approach is different from the traditional adjustment layer. I am talking about the actual track instead of adjustment layer. The track which will affect the one below, as mentioned in the video.
And I couldn’t see that in the roadmap, that’s why I decided to re raise it up,
You can already add filters to any track. In most videos editors, including Shotcut, the words “track” and “layer” mean the same thing. However, a lot of so-called adjustment layers are actually an adjustment clip, which is more flexible than a track since it is easier to control the start and end. I do not really see a difference between what you showed and wrote and all the other suggestions and tools around the same subject. The architecture of the engine does not support a dedicated track like you suggest. It really only supports generic tracks where you can hide audio, video, or both. The audio vs. video track type in Shotcut is really just an illusion.
Okay, I think now I fully understand, thanks. Well explained. So this means it will be impossible or complicated to make parent track of the video tracks, as you mentioned
Because my view is more like saying: If I have Video Track 1 and 2, let’s make Video Track 3 the parent of Video Track 1 and 2, and whatever effects applied on Video Track 3 will automatically affect whatever is on Video Track 1 and 2, because Video Track 3 has been assigned as the parent to Video Track 1 and 2. I don’t know if you understand, but that was basically what I was saying. Maybe in video tracks, there’s a button where you can click to assign which video track you want as a child.
So, the main difference between my request and others is that I know you can apply effects in adjustment layers, and they will affect all the video clips below it. But I’ve come up with an alternative, instead of traditional adjustment layers, let’s use video track parenting, where effects applied to the parent track affect all video tracks assigned as its children. That’s the simple explanation of what I was trying to say.
But now I understand why it would be complicated, thanks so much for explaining. Ngiyabonga (You’ll need to translate the last word, it’s thanks in my home language )
I like the idea. But Dan is right. To make this work with the existing engine, the design complexity would be very high. Basically, each adjustment layer track would be a whole other timeline nested inside a track. There might be other workflows that you could explore to get you part way there. For example, nested Shotcut projects. It would be easier, and less complex for us to improve project nesting than this adjustment layer track idea.
