I'm Getting Started, Slideshow Project

Hi,

I have just started with Shotcut and I’m excited to try it out. I have come from using Windows Movie Maker for creating 6+ videos, but support for that has been discontinued. I still have it, and I believe it can still be downloaded from MS. I have not yet tried the Video Editor app they just put out, but if anything I’d have to guess it probably has less functionality than Movie Maker.

I figured I’d make a switch now since Shotcut is also free, is available on Windows and Mac (I have a Mac laptop, Windows desktop), and because it can export to more video formats including 4K. I don’t have a 4K TV myself but I have some family members that do and I thought it would be interesting to try. My regular camera takes photos of pixel dimensions that are higher than 4K so there is a chance to take advantage of that at least a little bit. I imagine Shotcut will be gaining more users as a result of these things.

I read a few articles and watched the official Getting Started video, and then I got started trying it. It seems like impressive software, but of course I’m not yet really familiar with it. I’ve been to a few forum posts since then for questions that came up. I got to a point where I thought I needed to learn more, so that’s why I’m posting here.

Could you tell me more about the general workflow of the software?

I’ll give my situation. I have about 400 photos and videos (mostly photos) in a directory for this video project. Some of these have been edited in an image editing program already, some panorama photos stitched together, and things like that. I was able to load them into the playlist, mostly in the order I wanted. By the way, I really don’t like how MacOS does not have the ability to sort photos in a directory by EXIF date taken. Boo, MacOS.

From there, I was able to Add All To Timeline, and after a few seconds everything was in my timeline at the bottom. In the time since that, I have cut and pasted many items in the timeline to get them into the correct order. I have also used Split to cut up a bunch of the video clips into the portions that I want to show and removed the remainders from the Timeline.

At this point I realize I want to lengthen the duration on at least some of the still photos. I can see that the default duration is 4 seconds from looking at things in the Timeline.

I came across the forum post ( Changing the duration of a still ) about this and realize this needs to be done in the Playlist. Strangely, in the Playlist, I see the duration of all my still photos is set to 3:29 for some reason. I don’t know why it’s different there from the 4 seconds I saw in the Timeline. I was able to change the duration for one photo somewhat awkwardly. I went back to the Playlist and found the item there, double clicked it, then went to the Properties tab, and I could adjust the duration. Then I clicked the Playlist tab again and clicked the checkmark to actually make the change.

Now, that change isn’t reflected in the Timeline. So I guess I could add this to the Timeline, put it in the right place, and then remove the previous 4-second version from the Timeline. I used an option for Add All To Timeline originally to add my Playlist times to the Timeline, but I don’t see an option for just adding the one selected item to the Timeline. But I tried dragging it… yeah that seems to do something, but not exactly what I had in mind. When I dragged it over the spot in the Timeline, there was an overlay message that says “Overwrite”. Ok cool. I dropped it on the one I want to overwrite. But it seemed to have sort of overwritten from the exact spot in the Timeline where I dropped it, meaning it has overwritten most of the next photo as well. Thank goodness for the Undo button. After a couple tries, now I notice one of my photos after that is only about 2 seconds long

What I figured out that I could do to add it is to just use the + button under Timeline, which adds it to the end, then go to the end of the Timeline, cut it, and then paste it into the right spot. Then I removed the other version. Now I have what I want for that one photo. Is there any way to insert it in between two things… where the playhead is located? What am I missing?

I noticed it seems like these two Timeline functions are the same, though with quite different names:

    • (minus) button “Ripple Delete - Remove current clip shifting following clips to the left”
  1. right-click, Remove

Now what do I do to fix the one that got shortened to just under 2 seconds? I’ll do the same thing I guess.

So, I have a bunch of questions at this point. I’ll start with going back to the workflow idea. When making a photo/video slideshow such as I am, what is the best way to do things?

It seems that editing duration can only done in the Playlist, and can’t be done in the Timeline. From the tutorial video, I remember seeing that speed can be changed in the Timeline though. How about ordering everything? Is ordering best done in the Timeline or the Playlist? There was no playlist in Windows Movie Maker so it sort of seems like an extra thing for me right now. But I guess it allows you to make some changes to the component items while you can still add or remove them from the Timeline without losing those changes.

Why do my photo stills show having 3:29 duration in the Playlist, but 4:00 duration in the Timeline? This is for all of them that I did not edit. For the ones I did edit the duration, they appear to have the same duration once added to the Timeline.

I don’t want to add transitions, but I would like to add pan/zoom to my stills. I found information about that in a 3rd party article. At first I didn’t see exactly what the article mentions (Size and Position). But then I saw it from the Getting Started video after the starred favorite filters were mentioned. I found Size and Position in the non-starred filters. Great, these sound exactly like the possibilities that were available in Windows Movie Maker. And I like that it looks like it fills the “screen”. I did read that multiple select isn’t possible so I imagine I’ll have to apply this to all of them one at a time. Ok, I’ll just get as fast as I can at that and try to crank through it, and sort of randomize on my own

Here’s a different question - how do I adjust the preview video to show different proportions? Most of my photos are 4:3, but I plan to export for viewing on TV, so 16:9. I also have a bunch of panoramas and various others that I’ve adjusted to 3840 width and/or 2160 height and such. It would be helpful to see the resulting “black bars” for the different situations and that would also help dictate what I choose for any still photo motion effect.

And finally, I did take a quick glance at the Export situation by clicking the Export button. I don’t see any presets so I guess I just have to type in the resolution there? Any suggestions? Or are the “Stock” things on the left presets? I see Youtube there. But selecting those doesn’t change the resolution or anything else on the right so I’m not sure what’s going on. Ah, now I see they do change if I select something under the “device” or “intermediate” headers further down. Any thoughts on how to pick the right thing here?

Big thanks in advance to any help, suggestions, etc.! I look forward to using Shotcut more.

Can’t answer all your questions but I’ll give you a few tips to help with the editing and make things go a bit smoother.

Take a look at the keyboard shortcuts. https://shotcut.org/howtos/keyboard-shortcuts/ I use the keyboard for most editing. Found it to be more precise than using the mouse.

Yes. You can open a clip from the playlist in the source viewer. Double click or drag n drop. Then press c or CTRL C to copy the clip. Place the play head where you want to put the clip. It can be between two clips or on a clip. Depends on where you want to place the copied clip. CTRL V or v will insert the clip at the play head position and move all the clips to the right. CTRL B or b will insert the clip at the play head position and overwrite the clip to the right. You can use the same process for clips on the timeline.

Duration can be edited in the source viewer using in an out points which can be set with the i and o keys or by dragging the triangles. On the timeline use the drag handles to adjust duration.

Tux Designer has some very good tutorials for Shotcut and other opensource software.

Hi sauron, thanks for the tips. That definitely helps putting new clips into a certain spot in the timeline. And great to know about the duration. I was able to use the drag handles on the timeline for that. I wasn’t able to try it on the source viewer since I didn’t see the same thing there. Maybe my timeline is so long that one 4-second photo doesn’t show up with any width.

Working more, I found I could move left and right between items on the timeline using option-left/option-right. Option on Mac is the same as Alt for non-Mac I believe.

But in doing this, I discovered I had some photos in my timeline that had only like one one-hundredth of a second duration! I used the timeline zoom and I was able to actually select them and cut them out. The drag handles didn’t seem to work at the original zoom and would have been pretty useless zoomed way in. There were several in a row at first, and then I found they occurred every 7 items (so far). I’ll have to page through my whole timeline and remove and re-add these photos. Maybe they are duplicates; I don’t know yet. I wonder how the hell this happened. Any ideas?

I also had several instances when I double clicked an item in the timeline, and then it jumped me all the way to the end of the timeline (where the playhead had been before). It resulted in some frustration and a lot of scrolling. I don’t know how to explain that one since it didn’t happen every time.

Thanks, I will check out the Tux Designer youtube channel when I get a chance.

I might end up starting over, ugh. I guess that’s learning curve growing pains. That way I can make the duration change for photos rather than one at a time. If I do, is there any way to reorder items in the Playlist based on EXIF date taken? I doubt it but figured I would ask. I will probably switch over to my Windows desktop just for that reason.

And I thought of another question. Is there a way to move a project to another directory or computer? I know the file paths will be different and they are likely in that XML file. That would probably be an easy find/replace with a text editor in any case, correct?

Now that I mention the XML file, that might be a much faster way to do some batch edits such as changing the duration or adding pan/zoom to (almost) everything. I haven’t taken a look at the file yet, but does that sound doable?

Also, back to one of my questions from my first post… I tried to do some Googling, but I wasn’t able to find any way to adjust the width/height proportions on the viewer. I did see someone else in the forum say that the player maintains the aspect ratio of the source video. Well I have photos (some wide stitched panoramas) and videos that have different aspect ratios and since I’d like to add some pan/zoom, I would really like to see the effect for the aspect ratio that I am targeting for output - basically for viewing on a TV, 16:9.

Thanks again for any help

That is the case when Settings > Video Mode = Automatic (and the first thing added to Playlist or Timeline is a video). If you want control - highly recommended - change Settings > Video Mode to something that you want before starting a project.

Oh that’s a good bit of info on exactly how that works. Thanks. That settles it. I’ll start over.

I see those are specific settings with resolution and frame rate. Does this only affect the viewer (preview)? I know there are more video choices in the export function. I hoped to export my project to 2 different formats once I have finished and I just want to make sure that the Video Mode won’t cause undesired reduction in quality in exported video. You probably know what I mean, but for an example - I set Video Mode to SD NTSC in the viewer, but export to SD NTSC as well as 720, 1080, 3840… hopefully the video doesn’t turn to total crap, scaling based on SD).

All right, I’m about to start the new project on my desktop… more screen size, more power, Windows allows ordering based on photo taken date so I can import that way too. Lots of advantages now.

I still am unsure about the Video Mode. Does the Video Mode setting have any relation to exporting to a final video file? As I said above, I would like the preview video to be 16:9 proportions so that I can choose the best pan/zoom settings for my different proportioned photos, but I don’t really care about preview quality apart from that. I plan to export to 1080p, and perhaps also UHD for watching on TVs. I just want to make sure I don’t limit quality for the final output. What should I set the video mode to?

Yes. It established the default video settings in Export. If you deviate from them, there is greater risk that you will not get the results you wanted. Imagine creating a highly formatted document in one page size portrait mode and then trying to print it on a different size paper in landscape mode.

Thank you. So do I understand correctly that if I wish to ultimately export a project to both 1080p and to 2160p, that I should set the Video Mode to 2160p from the very beginning of my work on the project to ensure there isn’t a loss of quality?

yes

Hi @sauron
I’m working on the duration of a clip (photo) again and I can’t seem to adjust it like you said. Yours is the only reply about that so I’m not picking on you  From experimentation, I think the i and o actually set start and end points, trimming off the beginning or end and leaving empty space. This is a photo slideshow so that’s not the way to go. Also I actually want to increase the length of the one I’m looking at as I type this.

As for using the triangles in the source viewer - I don’t see those. I notice your screenshot shows you are in Source tab, and I’m in Project tab. I can’t seem to select the Source tab actually.

Using the handles in the timeline doesn’t work either. That will either trim, or create a transition with the next photo due to overlapping.

Here’s my screenshot-

You’re on the right path, but you need to cross the bridge.

Need to have a color selected (Open Other) in the Source viewer.
If you’re not sure how much space you need, Turn on Ripple to insert the white clip, which should be set to a small value, which can be set in the Source Viewer, before dragging to the timeline.
One the white clip is in the timeline, turn Ripple off, and Snapping has to be off. Or at least I prefer snapping to be off.

When you’re in the timeline the i and o keys trim the clip at the play head.

image

To increase the length you need to turn ripple on and drag the the trim handle to the right. That increases the length of the clip and moves everything to the right as well.

The triangles are only available in the source tab.

image

You can choose between source and project tabs by clicking the appropriate tab or use the ESC key to toggle between them.

Turn ripple on. Then you can increase or decrease the image length and not trim or create a transition.

Yeah, that’s the ticket. Is there any way to type in a duration in seconds?

Clicking the Source tab does nothing for some reason, Escape key also.

Now I also ran into an issue with one photo on my timeline. It doesn’t seem to respond to any Size and Position filters I add to it, custom preset or normal. Or more precisely, I can see an outline rectangle doing something, but the image does not move at all. I remove the filters and start over and same thing. I closed and reopened the program as well.

I notice something looks weird in the Keyframes area, like there is an overlap of some kind. It also doesn’t have the green and red lines for the start/end, or the keyframe black dots. Here’s a screenshot. Can you see what’s going on from that any chance?

Wait, now I just added a Brightness filter and that did make it brighter. And actually it looks like it’s back to normal now in the Keyframes area. What the hell. Size and position filter works again. Maybe a bug.

Keep in mind that you cannot trim a clip beyond its beginning or end. If the in point is greater than the beginning you trim it leftward; otherwise, not. Still images have a synthetic duration that is quite long; however an image clip defaults to having the in point at 0. When it is loaded in the Source player, you can set the in point > 0 by several seconds and then set the out point to something N seconds after the in point before adding it to the timeline to facilitate making transitions by trimming.

Clicking the Source tab does nothing for some reason, Escape key also.

Then, the Source player is empty. It does not reflect what is selected in Timeline or Playlist. Source, Playlist, and Timeline are all separate media containers that you copy clips between.

As @shotcut pointed out the source player is empty. Either drop a clip into it from the playlist. Or to add a clip from the timeline. Select the clip, press c or CTRL c to copy then click the source tab and the selected clip will appear in the source viewer.

Ok, yeah, I guess I’m not using the source player at all here. I have been living in the Timeline. I see I can select the Source tab if I first go to the Playlist tab and select something there. I see the triangles. Should I be doing stuff using the items in the Playlist at this point? Is that another way to adjust the duration of something in the Timeline? I figured since these were added to the Timeline already then that’s where I have to work… unless I want to remove the thing, do something with it in Playlist, then add it back.

Ripple dragging in the Timeline is working great.

I will be speaking Shotcut’s language eventually. Thanks for the patience.

It depends on what you want to do. I sometimes open a clip in the source viewer, then add several filters to it to see how the clip will play with different filters and then play with the filter order. Then I might add the clip to the timeline or simply add it to the playlist with the filters to review later.

You can adjust the duration of a clip in the timeline using the trimming handles. You can also copy the clip to the source player and adjust the duration there. But you will need to add the clip back to the timeline after adjusting. Adjustments made in the source player don;t carry over to the timeline.

You don’t need to use the timeline at all if you just want to put a few clips together and export without fancy transitions that need multiple tracks. Just trim the clips and add what filters you want in the source viewer. Add them to the playlist. Arrange the play order and export from the playlist.

You need to use the “Ripple trim and drop” feature. See the circular icon in the row of icons just above the timeline (2 icons to the right of the magnet (snapping) icon)? Click on it to switch it on (it turns blue). Then when you click and drag the right-hand edge of the clip, it will lengthen it, and all clips to the right will be shoved along the timeline.

Make sure you switch it off afterwards for “normal” editing…

Jon

[EDIT - oops, I just read this thread again and realised the post I replied to wasn’t the last one in the thread, and your question had already been answered by @sauron. There was an advertisement below the post, that’s why I thought it was the last one. Sorry!)

Cool, ok, I think with more experience I’ll learn the way I want to work. It makes sense you can add filters and adjust in either place, Playlist or Timeline. I didn’t realize you can export from the Playlist too. Playlist might be easiest for adjusting the order of things with all of these photos.

So do I understand correctly that if I wish to ultimately export a project to both 1080p and to 2160p, that I should set the Video Mode to 2160p from the very beginning of my work on the project to ensure there isn’t a loss of quality?

yes

I have a new question related to the Video Mode. I just built a new computer (finally will have an easier time with these now). I installed the current version of Shotcut and opened a previous project and got back to work. After some time I realized I should check the Video Mode and it was set to “Automatic”. That’s default for the program I guess, but it didn’t remember what mode I was using in this project. Perhaps it’s just a program setting and not project-specific.

I checked the MLT file and I do see 3840x2160 in the profile line near the top -
<profile description="HD 1080p 25 fps" width="3840" height="2160" progressive="1" sample_aspect_num="1" sample_aspect_den="1" display_aspect_num="16" display_aspect_den="9" frame_rate_num="30000" frame_rate_den="1001" colorspace="709"/>

So what should I do now? That description and width/height seem to disagree. I checked another one of mine and it is similar. Luckily on this one I haven’t done any size and position stuff yet (if that matters). I just have everything in the Playlist still, no transitions. So will I lose anything by changing Video Mode to 2160p? Is something already lost?

Thanks
