I’m having trouble placing new clips on the timeline

Hello, I use Shotcut to create my videos. It’s a great piece of software, but

I’m having trouble placing new clips on the timeline. I always have to move them to the right edge of the screen, which makes them hard to see. I’ve attached a video to show the problem…

Hi @jjmax.
I’m not sure I understand the problem. In your video you de-zoom the Timeline, making it easier to see where the clip is added. Isn’t that the solution to your problem?

In any case, there are a few ways to move a clip in the Timeline from the Playlist.

  • Drag them (like you show in your video).
  • Double-click on the clip and press the Append button (or A on your keyboard).
This will place the clip at the end of the timeline.
  • Double-click on the clip and press the Paste button (or Ctrl+V on your keyboard).
This will ripple-paste the clip at the position of the Playhead in the Timeline.
  • Select (single-click) a clip in the Playlist then:
Playlist menu > Add selected to Timeline.
This will place the clip at the end of the timeline.

Note that there is no default keyboard shortcut for this last one.
But you can create your own custom one (for example Alt+A).

I hope this helps.

The advice from @musicalbox is excellent (as usual, from him). Shotcut tracks are as long as the LAST-placed image or video. Here’s a workaround if you want to keep adding images to a long track. I add a second track, and on it I put a transparent colour clip, and make it very long. This makes the track long, too, so you can position your images where you want on the track without them having to be placed at the end:

Thank you for your reply. Yes, it is easier, and there is also the little extra, as well as the down arrow on the icon bar above the timeline.

Great, I hadn’t thought of that, but it does indeed give more flexibility in manipulating the timeline!!!
