How to compress / reduce numerous clips to a set time

Good day all. I was wondring if any one could help me.
I do apologise if this is obvious however the soloution seems to be elusive to me as this is my first venture in to video editing other than basic cut ans paste programs.

I have a number of video clips from a gopro which I have imported and placed in the output section.
I am trying to compress all of these clips in one of two ways :-

1- either select all of the clips and use the properties tab to set the speed or duration of all of the clips at once.
— when I have tried selecting all of the clips this only changes one clip and as such I cant shrink the video down to a set lengh.

2-merge all of the clips in to one clip and then again use the properties tab to set the speed or duration of one merged clip.
— when I have attempted this the “merge with next clip” option is not selectable.

The only way I can do this without help is to add all of the clips, export the video and reload it, and them compress the video to a time which I want. I am sure I am missing something and if any ecperts here could help me out I would me very thankful.

I would suggest this two-step process

  1. Combine all the files into one: Click Open and choose all your gopro files in the file open dialog. This will load all the files into the playlist. Go to the export tab, and make sure it says from “Playlist”. Export the playlist to a new file named “combined.mp4”

  2. Speed up the combined file: In Shotcut, Click Open and choose “combined.mp4”. In the properties panel, change the speed as desired. Go to the export tab, and make sure it says from “Source”. Export the sped up clip.

To limit the duration of all clips use Playlist > menu > Generate Slideshow from Selected.

To change the speed of all clips you need to visit each one and change in Properties; there is no batch operation for it.
