how to change the duration of a movie

Hello to everybody, I’m new here and I would be grateful to anyone who can answer me.

I want to know if it is possible to change the duration of a movie - video + sound - with Shotcut.

My situation is the following : I have a HD movie (1080p mp4 file) with 2 sound tracks - spanish & english; I have the same movie in low quality (720 x 416 avi file) with a french sound track.

My goal is to replace the sound track of the HD movie by the french sound track. But the durations of the 2 movies are different. Regardless of the opening and closing credits of the films, the time elapsed between the first and last image is 6 minutes longer for the HD file than for the avi file. If I can modify the duration of the avi file so that it is the same as the HD file, then I can replace the audio track of the HD file by the french one.

I already tried to change the duration of the french movie with Shotcut, with the timeremap feature, but only the video track is modified. The audio track remains unchanged, and it is therefore out of sync with the video.

Is it possible to do this with Shotcut? And if so, has anyone ever done this kind of manipulation before?

Thanks in advance

It is not possible to do this and maintain sync.

Thank you for your fast answer.

And could it be possible to modify only audio track, by setting the playback speed lower? But in this case, I’m losing the video markers needed to synchronize with the HD video.

It is possible that I do not understand completely, but yes you can change audio and video individually. There is a Detach Audio command.

Yes I know that command. From the moment I detach the audio from the first video, it becomes impossible to resynchronize it with the second one. With the video, I can match the frames between the 2 files on the timeline. But matching the audio tracks is impossible without the images.

Again thank you for trying to help me :slightly_smiling_face:

In the meantime, I found the solution myself. It’s much easier to do than to explain.

In fact, when a video clip is placed on the timeline, properties can be accessed. In these properties there is a parameter called “speed”. It allows to change the playback speed of the video file, video and sound together. Then It is easy to slow down the fastest film until the images match the slowest.

After this, the sound tracks are matching too, and the french track can replace the original one. And the result is just perfect.

Thanks again to Shotcut Leader, and thanks to all the Shotcut developers  :slightly_smiling_face:

I was thinking to suggest that but was pessimistic it would maintain sync
