Help with syncing images with audio

HI there,

I’m making a film about my Mum for what would have been her 90th birthday in August.

I’ve recorded audio interviews with friends and family, and am trying to sync the audio with a number of jpeg images.

I was doing fine for the first few sections, but now that the audio and image tracks are getting longer, it’s getting more complicated (and frustrating!)

What I would like to know is:

  • Is there a way I can fix an image in position (so that it syncs with the relevant audio), even if I add another image to a different section of audio further down the line? At the moment, I’m having to re-fit images to audio every time I add something.

  • In the context of trying to achieve the above, what is the difference between Ripple and Ripple All Tracks? If I want to achieve the above should I have a) Ripple turned on, b) Ripple All Tracks turned on, or c) neither of them turned on?

Thanks so much for your help.

Learn about the different ways to “add.” The timeline toolbar button and action Overwrite does not move the clips already in the timeline, but it requires the source image of that operation to be in the Source player. When using drag-n-drop instead, the Ripple button toggles between insert and overwrite. Also, you can use a video track above to insert a new image without moving the images on a different track. Workflow matters a lot here because it would probably be better to work chronologically since the audio seems to be governing the timing.

Regarding Ripple All Tracks, it seems self-explanatory, but I cannot advise on which to use for this kind of project. I find that Ripple All is something I usually only turn on for a specific operation or a few steps and then turn it off because trying to leave it on sometimes creates an unwelcome surprise. Just keep in mind that locking a track is your friend especially in conjunction with Ripple All Tracks.
