I am using Shotcut 25.08.16 via Flatpak on Linux Mint 22.2. Whenever I work on a project, the Gain/Volume filter randomly keeps getting applied to different clips without my adding it, and the volume level is different for each one. Whenever I do a project, I have to go through all my audio clips to see if it a Gain / Volume filter appeared, and remove it, prior to exporting the video. Any suggestion on how to stop this from happening?
Settings > Timeline > Adjust Clip Gain/Volume was added and defaults to on. That enables the horizontal line inside the clip block to be dragged up and down to adjust volume.
Thank you. I am not sure how it got enabled, but I will make sure it is not enabled going forward.
It’s not actually a bug, but rather a new behavior introduced in recent Shotcut versions. As you mentioned, under Settings → Timeline → Adjust Clip Gain/Volume, this feature is now enabled by default. When it’s on, Shotcut automatically links the timeline’s volume envelope (that horizontal line) to the Gain/Volume filter, which can make it look like the filter is being randomly added to clips.
Not sure why they would choose to automatically have it enabled. For those that are not aware of it, such as I was, it comes as a bit of a shock when you are playing your completed video back and all of a sudden one section has the volume turned up to 30. Also, and I don’t think I am alone in this, but not everyone wants the GainVolume added. I usually only use it to to lower the volume on B roll clips.
Thank you for the explanation.
I will change the default to off for the next version. Sometimes I choose the default on to make enough people aware of a new feature and get feedback. I think I got that it seems to cause more harm than good (the good being a more obvious and convenient way to change the volume–a common need–for new or casual users).
I actually like your idea of automatically adding the Gain/Volume to clips as it does make people aware of it. My issue with it was that not only was it added, but rather than leave the Level at 0.0, it would change it to some random number, sometimes high and sometimes low. If you could have it so that the Level stays at 0.0, I think that will accomplish your goal of letting new and causal users know it’s there, as well as appease the people that have been having an issue with it.
The volume level is adjusted by dragging the horizontal line near the top of waveforms up or down. It is not simply automatically add the filter to all new clips with a random value. That would be silly. You got seemingly random values because you were dragging the line when you thought you were dragging a clip.
Sorry, I don’t know which horizontal lines you are referring to or what the waveforms are, there is still a lot about Shotcut I am still learning about. I don’t know what to tell you. I have never had that issue with clips where I manually added the gain/volume filter. but seemed to with most every one that was automatically added.
