In the Text filter, selecting different font sizes does not “stick”. The font size always reverts to 24 which is unusable for me.

Font sizes are determined by the size of the text bounding box in the preview window. Resizing the box resizes the font. This is how Shotcut has always worked. Once you are aware of it’s functions then things become easier and more straight forward.
The other option [if you prefer using document type font sizing] is to use the Overlay HTML filter.
