You can turn on ripple mode and move the clip under the playhead to the right. It pushes all of the clips after it.

move them to a different track

You can select a range by using the shift key. It’s not much trouble. Say you have the clip under the playhead selected. Press home or end key. Shift-click the clip at the beginning or end.

You did not answer the question about whether to select on all tracks.

Many actions for clips in the timeline require that you select one or more of them. There are also some actions that only work when a single clip is selected. Click the menu button in the top left of the Timeline: there is a Selection menu. Selected clips on the timeline have a red outline unless it is part of a group.
