I can export videos that are under 10 minutes, but this one which just adds an mp3 soundtrack to an 57 minute long MP4 video file won’t export even if i cut it down to 5 minutes.

Does shotcut load the whole fie into memory before selecting the portion of the file to be included in the export?

My computer only has 8GB of ram. Is there a rough estimate of the memory required to export an file with roughly an hour of 1 mp4 and 1 mp3?

How much memory Shotcut/ Melt uses depends on lots of things. How many filters are you using? How complicated are these filters? How much keyframing are you using? How many transitions? How many tracks? How many clips? What resolution are you exporting to? What resolution are your clips? What codec are you using? are you using “parallel threads”? Another thing to do (mentioned by me elsewhere) on tight memory issues is to encode outside Shotcut: in Shotcut, start an export job and stop it right-click the job and view XML save XML with .mlt or .xml extension (It now includes a <consumer> element that contains the export parameters including file name.) close Shotcut open a command line window run like /path/to/qmelt /path/to/xml from step 3 (how this is done exactly depends on OS)

Length does not matter; complexity and resolution does (as well as what else is running on your computer).
