Fade in text filter doesn't work the way I want it to

I’m using the text filter to create subtitles, with the text set to 60pt Arial narrow bold in white. That bit works fine but when I then use the fade in video and fade out video filters, the text appears as black and then gradually fades in to white then fades out to black again.
Is there a simple solution to this?

Have you tried the checkbox that says “Adjust opacity instead of fade with black”?
