Export is desaturated (no HDR)

Looked but haven’t found documentation that matches my issue! My video looks fine in the editor, but is desaturated in the export.

The original clips are not in HDR. (They are in 4k, from my iPhone.) Color space and transfer are ITU-R BT.709. I tried both color ranges, and tried converting to “better” quality .mov files, no change.

This is happening both on my PC and my Mac, on two different cuts of the video loaded from my Dropbox. I’ve edited and exported 4k vid from my phone in the past with no issues. Thank you for any help!

Show the Properties of the original file, not converted.

Charmed, I’m sure!

I made the adjustment from broadcast → full myself, didn’t seem to make a diff.

Also, I just noticed the letterbox in my original screenshot. I must have accidentally changed the aspect ratio when experimenting, pay no attention to that :innocent:

Thank you in advance for any ideas or insight!

Maybe it has something to do with your export settings. Which export preset are you using? Are you changing anything in “Advanced”?

Also, what player are you using to view your exported file? How does the exported file look if you open it back up in Shotcut?

Good question about which player I’m using – was just QuickTime, but can confirm that the exported video also looks dull in Windows Media Player and when opened in Shotcut.

I actually have never touched the export settings, that I know of! I don’t see a preset selected, and here’s what I see in Advanced:

Huh. I’m running out of ideas. The color difference reminds me of the effect that occurs when the color range is not set correctly. But you seem to have a pretty good handle on that.

In your first screenshot, you had selected “full” color range on the converted clip. When you change that, do you see the brightness of the image change?

As an experiment, you could change the color range in the advanced export settings to see if that makes a difference. It wouldn’t be a “fix”, but maybe it would be a hint to a different problem.
