Deteriorating sound levels

Hi.

New user of Shotcut. Really loving it.

Been editing some avi files, removing bits and moving them around to make a complete file, then saving as MP4.

Been noticing the sound levels have been drastically reduced with each saving, to the point where they can barely be heard. On the sound bar of the time line, the wave forms have decreased to almost nothing.

I haven’t noticed any distortion as such.

Any suggestions how I might preserve the sound levels or boost them back up again?
