Contrast with importing clips - Again

This problem seems to be back. I am importing HEVC UHD Video from a Pixel 8 and also a Pixel 4a phone.
Original:
Codec HEVC
Resolution 2160x3840
Frame Rate 59.402300 (variable)
Format yuvj420p
Color Space ITU-R BT.601
Color transfer ITU-R BT.601
Aspect ratio 9x16
Scan mode Progressive
Color range Full (JPEG)
Rotation 90

Converted video
Same as above except for:
Codec Ut Video
Frame rate 59.940060
Format yuv420p
Color Space & transfer ITU-BT.709

Imported video is washed out completely with very low brightness and contrast

Mediainfo doesn’t show HDR.

1558.txt (3.9 KB)
1558-converted.txt (3.2 KB)

Of course I can add filters and correct each of very many videos, but this just shouldn’t happen in the first place.

Thank you for any help,
Jim Shipman

How does it look if you don’t convert it in both Shotcut and another media player?

For the converted, does it look correct if you change Properties > Color range?

I have one Pixel video contributed by a user, but I do not know which model–there is no metadata to indicate it. But I see it was recorded in 2021 and with H.264 and also has full color range. I converted it with Best, and it is roughly the same as VLC

I noticed your converted video says “Color Space & transfer ITU-BT.709”

In the Convert dialog, do not choose the option Convert to BT.709 colorspace for SDR videos. That option always inserts a heavy tone-mapping, which is not what you want. The tooltip for the checkbox says:

This is useful when the source video is HDR (High Dynamic Range), which requires tone-mapping to the old, standard range.

I will relabel the checkbox after the next release as the strings are currently locked for translation.
