I am trying to capture Hi8 tapes from my Sony DCR TRV320E (European)
I thought I followed all the instructions for set up, but all the clips I have recorded are blank. Can anyone explain where I might have gone wrong?
Thank you
What instructions? How? It is extremely rare for people to use Shotcut to capture. You are probably better off to simply use what is in your operating system: Camera on Windows 10/11, QuickTime Player on macOS, Cheese on Linux. Or, some use OBS Studio, which is a cross-platform third party application but somewhat advanced.
I have been using OBS Studio, but I have an issue with captured video being jerky when the footage is panning horizontally. One user on their forum suggested that I tried different software and recommended Shotcut with this link to instructions Shotcut v22.12.21 VHS or camera capture - Album on Imgur. When I got to slide 11, the instructions didn’t quite match reality, probably because the software has been updated. I did work out how to get it to record, but the resulting videos don’t play.
Windows Camera does not capture video from physical tape.
Try again but without choosing that MPEG2 preset, just use the default.
Does the resulting video play in Shotcut if you drag it on the timeline? I assume it’s just a codec issue not a capture problem. But also if windows couldn’t capture it I assume Shotcut also can’t.
Try to see if even VLC could open that device, but doesn’t that device come with an application or something? Is it using USB to stream a live video?
In Shotcut (like Camera) when you first open the device it tries to preview it. That is an important step to verify it works and let you make adjustments. This is before you start to record/capture to file. Does the preview work?
I’m not sure what I did differently, but I did eventually get something to record, but it was very poor quality and jerky. As you say, Shotcut is not primarily for capturing video and it could take a long time to get all the right settings, and even then might not be right. So I am going to give up on this and go back to OBS. Thank you for your help and suggestions.
