Background Noise

I’m working on a video of interviews. The only microphone used was on-camera and there is a lot of people in the background talking, laughing, etc. It is difficult to understand the person being interviewed. What audio tools in Shotcut can I use to minimize the background chatter?

There’s a very useful MacGyverism: use the equalizer in a program like VLC (see advanced controls, record, and then open the containing folder), or use this great Firefox extension and re-record the interview, then add that corrected audio track.
I recommend “Large Hall”, but you can play around with it, varying it a bit.
Personally, I don’t like Audacity because it can’t do “vocal remover,” although this other option can also help, as it separates things like the piano or bass and isolates the voice.

Finally, you can boost the audio with the gain filter.
