Adding text to videos

I’m trying to add text to video that syncs with the video. I thought the correct way of doing this was adding video tracks and then Open Other> Color (transparent), drag it to the timeline, creating a transparent track that text can be added to. I have 2 of these transparent tracks V2 & V3. The actual video is on V1. I used Text Rich to add a couple words to V2 and then to V3 which starts later to sync correctly with video. I figured I could split the clips of V2 & V3 this way to get lines to appear/disappear at the correct time. The issue I’m having is the text I put on V2 isn’t visible unless V2 is selected. I plan on adding effects to the text using keyframes, masks, etc., but for now I can’t even get them to appear on the screen for preview.

Something about your workflow is resetting the rich text color to transparent. Of course, the editor needs to still let you clearly edit translucent text; so it ignores the text color’s alpha channel. Thus, you see it only when the filter is selected. The solution (mentioned here numerous times) is to select the text inside the editor and set its color.

What I don’t understand is even though the text appears green, and the little square indicator in the text menu shows it as green, it is not visible in the preview area unless I have the track selected. If I have either V1 or V3 selected, I don’t see the text. If V2 is selected, the green text appears on time in the timeline. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, I’m sure it’s something I’m doing or not doing, because I’ve successfully added text to videos before. Something in my workflow like you said. I’ll try and start from scratch. Oh, and I did select the text to get it to be green, it was staying white before that, even though I was picking the color from the palette.

Have you tried Text:Simple instead of Text:Rich?

That worked, I have no idea why, but I’m going to do some experimenting.

Thanks
