26.9.27 Performance worse on segment click, drag, drop

3 second or longer delays when selecting a video/audio segment for drag/drop repositioning on the timeline. Significantly worse in usability and productivity compared to the previous version.

Does not happen for me and never came up during beta testing. Maybe it is specific to your system. Every change negatively affects some people.

No issue with the immediate previous release against the same laptop confiruration and WIndows patch level. Unclear why it’s happening now. Just letting the community know.

the drag/drop delay is pretty bad, my lag got up to 5 or 6 seconds per movement - but even worse if you attempt to copy a clip from one project to another, can take a minute or more.

I took a look into this again, and I do see a noticeable degradation on some clip drag-move operations on a very big project. However, it does not seem as bad as ā€œ3 second or longerā€ or ā€œ5 to 6 secondsā€ on my system (8-core/16-thread AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 5850U)

I have not reproduced ā€œcopy a clip from one project to another, can take a minute or moreā€ but my busy track V1 on this big project only has about 450 clips and total duration of 2 hours 20 minutes. It should not make a difference whether copy from another project, copy and paste in the same project, or insert a new clip in the middle of a busy track. Maybe on a low end system, the problem is more noticeable.

The regression was due to the timeline zoom performance improvement, which was a frequent complaint in previous versions and could even crash. I am working on a fix for the problem reported. It would be nice to get someone to test it.

What operating system are you on?

I’m on Windows 11-25H2 running on Lenovo/Intel i7 2.3GHz 32GB Ram 4GB Graphic card

It’s an older config, but again I was referring to the difference in performance between Shotcut releases. I’ve gone so far as to dump every other open app to free up all available CPU and memory but that doesn’t seem to improve the issue.

Here is a portable build that includes the proposed fix. I appreciate testing. It is unsigned, however, so you might need to ā€œbless it.ā€ It has already been scanned for viruses, not to mention the builds always run on fresh, clean, from-scratch machine (not my personal machine).

P.S. To run a portable, simply extract the zip, perhaps into your downloads folder, go into the Shotcut folder and double-click shotcut.exe

The the project which I finished on the last update has approx 250 clips (around 50 minutes run time). I will say the issue didn’t appear to scale with the busyness of the timeline. I’ve opened a new project and the lag applies immediately.

I ran the portable to test, from executing a trim on the timeline to grabbing and moving the next clip took almost exactly 5 seconds, some took a little longer, none took less. Which is consistent with the performance I was experience on the last update. I would say no change in my circumstance.

Of course I’m working with an older system but the previous version had no noticeable lag on these type of actions. Although on the positive side I was still able to undo actions which would have caused a full project crash in the prior version.

I tested the 29.10.5 patch and here are the results on my specific Windows 11 configuration. COuldn’t find the original post requesting the test.

I loaded the patch version and created a four and a half minute video with 35 video segments across 3 video tracks and 2 audio tracks. I added at least 2 filters on each video segment. The segment selection was immediate on click, and the drag and drop function provided an immediate response as well. This was a significant perrformance increase from the previous loaded (current Shotcut release). Rendering of this libx264 video took 20 minutes to complete on my older machine, and I did not perform any regression testing across other shotcut edit features so can’t say if any other edit/performance features were impacted.

I have a similar issue and didn’t want to start a whole topic because my situation may be a little unique. I’ve noticed some ā€˜delays’ when clicking on segments because now there’s animations in the highlighting and cutting of segments. This would basically be a non-issue if I didn’t use scripts to preform a lot of tedious tasks like applying filters and speeding up segments of clips. I can adjust my code to account for the added animations delay. But I was wondering if an option could be added to turn the animations off.

If you’re dealing with timeline drag and drop lag after updating, check Settings > Display Method and toggle between Direct3D and OpenGL to see if that helps. Disabling timeline track thumbnails and audio waveforms can also reduce UI redraw overhead when moving segments. Also verify that proxy editing and preview scaling are still active to help determine whether the delay stems from timeline interface redraws or clip decoding.

Thank you for the information, but I may have posted in the wrong thread. My issue is with how long it takes for a clip to be selected (have the red border around it). I have a script that knows where to put the next clip based on where the last selected clip was, and I’m having issues getting the script to work because of 2 reasons. It’s taking longer for the clip to be selected, and the red around the selected clip isn’t exactly the same each time.

I’m okay though, I just re-installed the previous version. I didn’t have any issues with it. Maybe I’ll try to upgrade again in the future and see if the issues that I was having have been resolved.

I’ve been fighting with this myself and trying the shared version v26.10.5 from above and I can say it’s a little better but still lagging seriously when I select the clip (like to split it or change the properties). I can’t find these ā€œSettings > Display Methodā€ you mention. I’m also using proxies on a SSD and I’ve disabled thumbnails. I do still need the audio waveform with the way I edit. Can we disable it per track? I suspect not since I don’t see that option.
