How to remove black margins on both sides from a video clip, so to get a clean video picture without those margins.

Referring to this answer, which worked.
I tried to use this method on a short clip which had black margins around, but not equal on each side, and it did not work.
So I have a question: This method works only if the black margins are equal on each side ?
