V. 29 timeline navigation keyboard shortcuts are SLOOOW

Hello -

I’ve been a very happy and fairly competent Shotcut user for several years, using a v 24… release on a homebuilt Windows 10 PC.

I use Shotcut to build and edit music videos. I frequently navigate the timeline with
[CTRL]-[Shift]-[Page-Up/Page Down]. On the v 24 release the playhead moved very quickly with that keyboard shortcut with no time-lag. However I recently upgraded to v 26.9 and now that same keyboard shortcut moves at the pace of a glacier. I’ve searched Shotcut Support and the Internet and found several pretty advanced and confusing suggestions, but all without success.

Am I missing something? In the new release is there a better, quicker way to do quick forward and backward moves with keyboard shortcuts?

Thanks!
Jim Clark

What is “v 24”? Use our version numbers, please. Usually the first 2 parts like v26.9 is OK. You could mean
v24.something, but I am not sure since your subject reads “V. 29” when the latest is 26.9. So, I am not sure you mean by “v 24.” If you did a major upgrade (big step), try turning off Settings > Preview Scaling > Use Hardware Decoder. That can actually be slower.

Thanks so much for the quick reply with your solution that fixed my problem.

V 24 was version 24.?? (I deleted that old version when I installed version 26.9, not V. 29). In the future, I will do better at providing complete and accurate information.

Thank you again for your help, support and this incredibly awesome program.

Jim

For this reason, I’m still using an older version of Shotcut (V22.12.21). The range of features it offers is sufficient for my needs; I only do fairly simple editing tasks. However, I use the jump functions with CTRL/ALT-PGUP/PGDN or the jogging function with the J, K, and L keys very frequently.

This older version is the last one where these functions work very smoothly, even when I’m quickly skimming through large sections of the video at high speeds (32x, 64x).

In newer versions, the fast forward/rewind and jogging functions are almost unusable for me. The application responds quite sluggishly; during fast forward/rewind, the cursor stutters erratically and jumps in much too large increments across the timeline.

However, this behavior depends heavily on the bitrate of the source video. At very low bitrates, it’s not a major problem, but at very high bitrates (e.g., H.264 at 20 Mbit/s), it’s extremely bad—regardless of the performance of the hardware being used.

I suspect that in newer versions, larger sections—or more frames—of the video are preloaded into a buffer. With higher video bitrates, this also means a significantly larger amount of data that must be preloaded when skipping ahead.
